5 Reasons To Choose Cosmetic Dentistry

cost of dental crowns Fargo

When was the last time you looked into the mirror? Were you totally satisfied by what you saw? If the answer is, “Not really,” then you may want to check out at these 5 great reasons to speak with your Fargo dentist about cosmetic dentistry procedures.

1. The first reason is that a little cosmetic dentistry goes a long way. Some of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as teeth whitening, are simple and easy to do, but they can have dramatic results.

2. Next, you might be surprised at how competitively priced it is! Next time you are in the office of your dentist, ask for a price chart. You may be pleasantly surprised.

3. Don’t worry about pain, your dentist will keep you comfortable. Many cosmetic dental patients expect the procedures to be painful, but dentists in the are trained to help you stay relaxed and free from discomfort. This is true whether you are getting dental implants, veneers, or a complete smile redesign.

4. You’re never too old! Many mature men and women think that cosmetic dentistry procedures are only for the young, but teeth continue to change throughout your life and these procedures may be exactly what is needed. Plus, many satisfied patients say they look years younger after their procedures are complete.

5. Your cosmetic dentist can treat your particular cosmetic dental trouble. Some folks have been led to believe that they have to live with chipped, cracked, or missing teeth, but today’s dentists have the tools and procedures to fix a wide array of dental troubles.

If you are looking for a dentist, Designer Smiles would love to serve you. My name is Dr. Dennis Hetland and I have been a Fargo, North Dakota dentist since 1996. Please call 701-566-5063 to make an appointment.

Treat Your Smile To A Healthy Diet

experienced family dentist Fargo

Proper nutrition can benefit you in a number of ways; increased energy, improved immunity, glowing skin, mental clarity, and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. How often, however, do you think about how your diet influences your oral health?

Your diet can impact your risk of cavities, enamel health, and gum condition. Healthy foods provide an environment that can prevent inflammation and infection. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts are the prime choices for oral health. Calcium-fortified beverages, milk and other dairy products provide vitamins, minerals, and calcium that helps with keeping teeth, bones, and gums healthy. Eating crispy fruits and vegetables, such as apples and celery, will help clean your teeth and gums.

A healthy diet contains all the vital vitamins and minerals, and the most important mineral for teeth is fluoride – especially for kids. Between the ages of 6 months and 16 years old, both the primary and the permanent teeth come in, therefore adequate fluoride is critical.

Don’t forget, however, that too much fluoride is dangerous. Dr. Dennis Hetland can advise you on the precise dosage of fluoride for your child, taking into account whether your municipal water is fluoridated.

Even though adults’ teeth have already formed, fluoride aids in remineralizing weakened enamel to a degree. This powerful mineral is applied to teeth during comprehensive dental cleanings at Designer Smiles and daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Bacteria that causes enamel-destroying plaque love a steady diet of sugar – from soda, candy, and even fruit juices. When enamel wears away, the teeth become vulnerable to decay, cracks, and discoloration.

Sugary foods that are especially detrimental are those that get trapped in the spaces between teeth and the tiny pits and cracks in the molars. Candies that are chewy or hard can lodge in these spaces and allow for the adverse sugar to have direct contact with enamel until brushing occurs. Sticky candy can also damage braces and retainers. More than one retainer has fallen prey to sticky caramel or hard taffy.

Be sure to brush after each meal and before bed. Moreover, remember to floss or use a water irrigating method to dislodge food particles trapped in spaces. By eating well, brushing properly, flossing regularly, and avoiding foods that stick to your teeth, you can have a beautiful smile for life. (And, hopefully, the physical fitness to complement that beautiful smile and the energy to enjoy both.)

I’m Dr. Dennis Hetland, and I have a full-service dental practice in Fargo. Helping my dental patients stay healthy is important to me, and so is helping them achieve the smile they want through innovation cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening and smile redesigns.

Beware Of Hidden Sugar

preventative dentistry in Fargo We advise our dental patients at Designer Smiles to watch their sugar intake to prevent cavities and other health problems.

If you are trying to unsweeten your diet, you are probably skipping the usual suspects: candy, soda, and baked treats. But not all sugar is as obvious as the frosting on a piece of chocolate cake or the powdery stuff in a pixie stix.

Here are some foods found in Fargo grocery stores and Fargo school cafeterias with a surprisingly high sugar content:

  • Ketchup
  • Low fat versions of snack foods (Manufacturers often replace fat with sugar.)
  • Salad dressing
  • Breads, buns, rolls
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Protein bars
  • Granola
  • Canned soup
  • Peanut butter
  • Yogurt
  • Fast food meals (Hamburgers, fries, sandwiches, and salads are often loaded with sugar, not to mention the dessert items.)
  • Antacids
  • Cough drops
  • Fruit smoothies (Even a small serving has a whopping amount of sugar.)

Reading the fine print on labels is a must. The following terms are all types of sugar:

raw sugar, cane sugar, glucose, lactose, galactose, fructose, dextrose, honey, sorghum, molasses, cane sugar, confectioner’s sugar, crystallized cane juice, invert sugar, maltodextrin (or dextrin), maple syrup, concentrated fruit juices, evaporated cane juice (what kind of cane do you think they are talking about?)

Do the math: when shopping at Fargo markets or health food stores, carefully decipher food labels before you buy. Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. Add up all the grams of every type of sugar listed and divide by four to truly understand how much sugar an item contains.

At Designer Smiles, we advocate and practice preventative care for lifelong dental health. For more information on how your diet affects your dental health, contact us at 701-566-5063. If you have a toddler or child who has not yet visited a dentist, call us today for a pediatric oral examination and information on fluoride and sealants.

Crown Or Veneer?

cosmetic dentistry Fargo

Designer Smiles offers multiple cosmetic dental procedures for creating unforgettable smiles. Two of the most popular procedures are dental crowns and porcelain veneers. Many patients don’t understand the difference between the two. Generally, a crown strengthens a compromised tooth while a veneer is used mainly for cosmetic improvements.

A dental crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth. A veneer is an ultra-thin layer for the front of a tooth. Veneers are made with several layers of extremely strong ceramic laminate. Crowns can be made of all porcelain (ceramic), porcelain fused to metal, or gold. Both crowns and veneers are affixed to the tooth with special adhesive. Crowns and veneers are durable and can last many years if properly cared for, though they are not stronger than natural enamel.

Both of these procedures improve the tooth aesthetically, but dental crowns are often a better solution for a tooth that has been compromised by decay, damage, or a root canal. Veneers can fix the shape of a tooth, fix a minor crack, cover stains, or straighten the appearance of teeth that are slightly misaligned.

The success of a crown or veneer procedure depends on expert professionals at the lab and in the dentist’s office. Your cosmetic dentist must prep the tooth, create a precision mold, and submit an accurate order to the lab.

The role of the Fargo dental lab technician is equally important.  Highly skilled lab technicians fabricate custom dental crowns and veneers to the specifications of the cosmetic dentist. They must have the expertise to meet the precise standards needed for successful restorations.

Consider the myriad characteristics of a restoration: the exact shape, the specific size, the precise color, and the proper placement in the mouth. This is a case of all or nothing – each variable must be right on the mark or it must be redone.

The team at Designer Smiles and the outstanding staff at our dental lab work together to provide the highest quality dental restorations for our valued patients.

If you would like more useful specifics about crowns, veneers, and other cosmetic dental procedures, I invite you to reach out to us to schedule a cosmetic dental consultation. I can help you achieve a smile that is both healthy and unforgettable. Call 701-566-5063 today!

5 Ways To Floss Daily

Porcelain veneers Fargo

Hello, Fargo! If you want to floss regularly but are too tired at night, this post is for you. In our Designer Smiles blog, we want to give you a few ideas for unique times to floss and keep your teeth and gums healthy.

1. If you’re an early riser, try flossing in the morning right after you brush.

2. Try just after lunch, but before you go back to work.

3. Before or after you exercise. Your oral health is just as important as your physical fitness. Keep some floss in your gym bag and give your teeth and gums some attention along with the rest of your body.

4. During the nightly news.

5. While taking a bath. Any task is more enjoyable if it can be done while relaxing in a warm tub. Light some scented candles, play some soothing music and turn off your cell phone for an at-home spa experience.

Flossing is essential for anyone who wants to have a healthy smile. I hope this gives you some ideas to help you make flossing part of your daily routine. Just before bedtime, however, is still the best choice. Food particles left on teeth can turn to plaque while you sleep. The bacteria in plaque erodes enamel, creates cavities, and adversely affects gum tissue.

If you want to improve your smile, look into cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening, invisible braces or porcelain veneers.

My name is Dr. Dennis Hetland. My practice is located in Fargo. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, as well as helping them achieve the smile they want with cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, porcelain crowns, and complete smile makeovers.

We are currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 701-566-5063 to make an appointment!

Beautifying With Bonding

Fargo fix chipped tooth

A cosmetic dentist’s toolkit is filled with handy tools for fixing most types of cosmetic tooth problems. In the past few years, porcelain veneers, dental implants, and same-day teeth whitening have received a lot of notoriety. In today’s post, we are going to talk about an effective, yet relatively uncelebrated dental treatment that has been used successfully for decades. We’re talking about dental bonding.

The dental bonding procedure uses a resin material that is durable and natural looking. It is applied to the teeth while soft and putty-like, and then hardened (or cured) with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth and can then be shaped and polished.

Dentists use bonding to correct tooth issues caused by decay, chips, or cracks. Large spaces between healthy teeth can be filled with bonding material, and bonding can protect tooth roots if the gums have receded.

Discolored teeth can also be lightened with bonding. Since bonding material is easily molded, teeth can be lengthened or re-shaped to more attractive proportions. Bonding is usually used as part of a total smile makeover.

I’m Dr. Dennis Hetland. My practice, Designer Smiles, offers dental implants, restorative dentistry, porcelain veneers, general dentistry, and teeth whitening.
