Saliva And Dental Health

Saliva And Fargo

In this blog post from Designer Smiles in Fargo, we discuss the significance of your saliva. Though most people may think it’s gross, saliva is important for dental health and digestion.

Saliva is mostly water, but a small portion of it is made up of enzymes, antibacterial substances, mucus, and minerals. The prime pH balance of the mouth is maintained by saliva, and pH balance is a vital factor for preventing cavities.

The minerals in saliva help to maintain the enamel surface of the teeth. Immunoproteins in saliva curb the overgrowth of microbes in the mouth, thereby protecting the gums from gingivitis.

Now that you know how important saliva is to dental health, I’m sure you can see why sufficient salivary flow should concern you. For most people, everyday chewing is enough to stimulate salivary glands to release saliva. However, dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition that should be dealt with quickly before oral health issues take place.

The team at Designer Smiles in Fargo would be happy to meet with you about any dental health concerns you may have. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Fargo

At Designer Smiles in Fargo, the dental health of each patient is our primary concern. We approach all your dental needs from two angles—what we can do in our office, and what you can do at home.

For example, teeth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more budget-friendly.

Additionally, we counsel you regarding food and drink choices that can impact your whitened smile. Be aware of staining agents such as coffee, tea, tobacco and soda. We understand that eliminating these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Education and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with it and help neutralize the acids. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can negate the results of teeth whitening.

If you are interested in making improvements to your dental health and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and call us. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment today.

Restoring Teeth At Designer Smiles

Tooth Restoration in FargoAt Designer Smiles in Fargo ND, we use a variety of dentistry to restore damaged teeth. Most dental patients are familiar with fillings. Traditional fillings are also called ‘direct restorations’ because they are applied to the tooth and then shaped and polished in one visit.

Another type of filling is called an ‘indirect restoration’ and is produced in a dental lab. There are two types: inlays and onlays.

When a tooth needs more extensive dental restoration, a crown is frequently used. At Designer Smiles, we create strong, natural-looking crowns from a variety of materials.

What if the tooth is damaged beyond repair? There are a number of satisfactory replacements for missing teeth. Dentures are not the only option.

At Designer Smiles in Fargo ND, we provide many services, including general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment today.

Tooth Tips For Traveling

Designer Smiles Tooth Tips For Traveling

If you are planning to take a long vacation or business trip soon, the team at Designer Smiles in Fargo reminds you not to forget your dental health needs.

It’s always a good idea to have a checkup prior to leaving on long vacations, especially if your trip is taking you to developing areas without modern dental care. This quick check-up will help you be sure that your mouth is ready to travel.

Another essential consideration: if you have any dental procedures scheduled before you leave, discuss it with your dentist. Many dental procedures are actually surgical procedures. This means that your body will need more time to heal than you may realize.

Also, if you’re leaving by plane, you should be aware that changes in the cabin pressure may cause tooth pain or discomfort for patients who have just had oral surgery. Furthermore, make sure you are aware of any needed follow-up appointments with your dentist or orthodontist before you schedule a vacation.

If you are looking for dental health care or cosmetic dentistry in the Fargo area, please call Designer Smiles today to schedule a consultation or examination.

Crowning Achievements In Dentistry

dental crowns Fargo

This article from Designer Smiles in Fargo looks at one of the miracles of modern dentistry: the dental crown, and other restorations.

Let’s pretend you are a biomedical engineer working in the field of dentistry before the development of dental restorations. The men and women of your generation who have missing or damaged teeth want to repair or replace them with a man-made substitute. You have been hired to find or create a material that can be used to construct fillings, crowns, and dental bridges.

Consider the physical and chemical requirements of this incredible material. It must withstand forces of 162 pounds per square inch (PSI), hundreds of times a day – day after day, year after year. It must be resistant to cracking and chipping. But there’s a catch regarding its strength; it must not damage the enamel on opposing teeth. This material must also maintain its size and shape and be resistant to shrinking.

It must be bondable to living tooth structure as well as other materials necessary for specific appliances. It must be biocompatible with the soft tissues in the mouth as well as tooth enamel, dentin, and bone. It can’t trigger allergic reactions in the wearers. It must be corrosion-resistant to the chemicals in saliva, foods, and beverages. It must resist infection regardless of ever-present bacteria in the mouth. And it can’t contain toxic chemicals that could be absorbed into the bloodstream.

And we haven’t even discussed the cosmetic properties yet. Ideally, this wondrous material would look exactly like genuine teeth in color, opacity, and translucence.

Of course, we know that such a material exists because dental restorations have been around for a long time. At this time, there are several materials used alone or in combination including porcelain, ceramic, and metals such as gold and silver amalgam. Though the metals are immensely strong and malleable, they don’t meet some patient’s esthetic requirements and are used mainly for back teeth.

It is interesting to note that porcelain, one of the ideal materials used in modern restorations, was developed over 2000 years ago in China.

Did the ancient Chinese porcelain originators who developed the techniques for molding, firing, and painting the beautiful tableware and vases admired around the world ever imagine that their invention would live beautifully in the mouths of millions of people more than twenty centuries later?

Is Your Mouth Sore Something Serious?

Fargo Dentists And Your Mouth Sores

As dental professionals, one of our roles at Designer Smiles in Fargo is to help you take care of your mouth with general dentistry. Some of our patients have troubles with mouth sores, thus the topic of today’s article.

If you have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two, it is critical to come in for an exam. Mouth sores can be an indicator of something serious, and an early assessment aids in getting prompt treatment. If necessary, pain relief can be offered. In extreme cases, we will refer you to a medical professional who specializes in ailments that can cause mouth sores.

There are two types of mouth sores; canker sores and cold sores.

Canker sores are small ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Canker sore usually heal in a week or two. Antimicrobial mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods assists in temporary relief while your sore is healing.

The cause of canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations include: a cut on the inside of the mouth, a reaction to extreme temperatures, acids from food or drink, fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or a virus, or a combination of these factors.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but typically heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics provide relief.

Hope on the Horizon

There are antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often transpires before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause intermittent cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.
