Fluoride is an asset to your dental health: it makes teeth stronger, and helps to prevent tooth decay. At the Design Center in Fargo, we remind our patients that fluoride is not just for kids.
The common view is that fluoride is essential to children and their developing teeth. This is not in dispute. But some people think that once they reach a certain age, they don’t need it anymore.
Fluoride makes adult teeth stronger and more cavity-resistant. The fluoride that we get from foods and beverages has a topical benefit, because it becomes part of the saliva. From there, the teeth are constantly bathed with small amounts of fluoride that strengthen tooth enamel.
The best ways to get fluoride, no matter your age, is to drink fluoridated water. Fluoride is in most water naturally, but many communities add it to the water supply.
We also recommend using toothpaste and mouth rinse with fluoride. You should brush anyway, of course, but choose a paste with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the label.
