Replace A Missing Tooth With A Durable Dental Implant

Fargo dental implants

Implants? Crowns? Veneers? Invisible braces? As dental technology and services expands, so does the vocabulary. Dentistry offers many new solutions to address almost every possible dental trouble.

Dr. Dennis Hetland provides experienced cosmetic and prime restorative care.

In the past, if a patient in Fargo had a missing tooth or a severely damaged tooth, North Dakota dentists regularly suggested dental bridges or dentures, because they were the best options at the time. These days, cutting-edge dental implants have proven to be superior to dental bridges for most Fargo patients. They can also replace dentures or anchor dentures for some patients.

A tooth implant provides many important advantages over a dental bridge or dentures:

Longevity – Dental implants are tough and permanent, meaning with proper care they can last ten years or more.
Seamless – Fabricated to have the same shape, size and color of the original tooth, the implant will blend seamlessly with all the other teeth. If the original tooth had aesthetic troubles, these can often be corrected with the implant crown.
Function – A dental implant functions like a natural tooth allowing for normal eating and speaking.
Convenience – Unlike dentures, no adhesives, rinsing, or removal is necessary.
Independent – Like the missing tooth, the dental implant is treated individually. No damaging of adjacent teeth is required, as with dental bridges. This independence allows nearby teeth to remain intact. Cleaning is easier than with most dental bridges which can require the threading of floss under and around the artificial tooth.

Let’s consider the tooth implant method:

If you are interested in getting a tooth implant, call Designer Smiles at 701-566-5063 to schedule a tooth implant consultation. Dr. Hetland will complete an exam, take x-rays and counsel with you. If it is determined that you are a good candidate for the procedure, the process will begin.

Plaster dental impressions of both upper and lower plates will be taken. Dr. Hetland will exactly place the titanium implant, which looks like a dark screw, into the bone of your jaw. Over the next couple of months, the bone and implant will bond together to form a new root for your new tooth.

After the required time has passed for bonding of the bone and implant, an extension (called an abutment) is placed on top of the initial implant post. This post extension is then capped with a temporary tooth. Meanwhile, the team of professionals at our lab will tailor your new, permanent crown.

Dr. Hetland will then put the beautiful permanent crown on top of the full post. This tooth will match your other teeth to create an exceptional new smile. You will find that the comfort is the same as your natural teeth, to the point that you may even forget which tooth is the implant. The upkeep is the same, with brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups needed.

If you want to ascertain if a tooth implant is right for you or desire specifics about smile redesigns, call Designer Smiles for more particulars. We look forward to meeting you!

What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Fargo Mini-Implants When you meet someone in Fargo who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for Fargo patients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in Fargo that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. Time To Upgrade Your Smile?

Cosmetic Dentistry Options Have you thought about upgrading your smile? Cosmetic dentistry offers many outstanding possibilities for Fargo residents.

The quickest and least invasive procedure is teeth whitening. The results are dramatic and teeth whitening side effects are minimal.

If your teeth are slightly crooked, but require no orthodontic work, porcelain veneers could be the answer. Porcelain teeth veneers are translucent, wafer-thin covers that are permanently attached to the front of teeth, correcting chips and stains. Prepless veneers do not require the removal of tooth structure.

If your teeth are more than slightly crooked, it’s not too late for braces. Fargo dental patients of all ages are undergoing orthodontic treatment and achieving fantastic results. The newest braces are less noticeable, more comfortable and bring teeth into alignment much faster than old-school metal braces.

Has gum recession caused the metal base of an old crown to be visible? Soft tissue grafts and/or crown replacement can correct this problem.

Are you missing one or more teeth? One of the best tooth replacement options is a dental implant. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone to provide a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.

Can you envision yourself with a dental makeover?

Just Like Natural Teeth (Naturally Perfect Teeth, That Is!)

porcelain veneers Fargo

Hello friends and neighbors in the Fargo area! Have you been searching for the right dentist to correct your crooked, stained, or chipped teeth? The team at Designer Smiles wants to end your search! We specialize in porcelain veneers, which are an outstanding, minimally-invasive answer for cracked, stained, or chipped teeth.

Porcelain veneers are custom-fitted glass-like porcelain shells that are permanently attached to the surface of the teeth that need correcting.

A veneer can transform a tooth’s color, shape, size, or length. The porcelain closely resembles real life tooth enamel so you will look like you were born with a perfect smile. Our veneers are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth – naturally perfect teeth, that is.

Because we offer porcelain veneers that are custom and fitted perfectly to your teeth, you can repair multiple issues at once with just one treatment.

Fix chips and cracks without compromising the healthy tooth structure.

When considering porcelain veneers, it’s vital that you have them done the right way by an experienced cosmetic dentist. When done the right way, porcelain veneers can stay strong and beautiful for many years.

Here at Designer Smiles, Dr. Dennis Hetland and our experienced ceramists will ensure that your porcelain veneers are done right. Then we will provide you with the information you need so you can maintain your unforgettable new smile!

Are All Carbs Created Equal?

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Fargo

Hello, I am Dr. Dennis Hetland of Designer Smiles in Fargo. Today, we are focusing on diet and oral health.

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Fargo dental practice for required cleanings, but did you know that making small but critical changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Fargo residents are aware that the sugar found in candy, cookies, juices and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Fargo people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

At Designer Smiles, I continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel.

Another vital way Fargo residents can improve their oral health is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and dangerous gum disease for Fargo dental patients, however, wise eating supports healthy teeth and gums.

My staff and I at Designer Smiles are accepting new Fargo general and cosmetic dental patients in the 58104 zip code area. I encourage you to call 701-566-5063 today to schedule an exam and cleaning, if needed.

Designer Smiles in Fargo offers a full menu of general and specialty dental services including TruDenta headache relief and sedation dentistry. For more specifics, call today to schedule an appointment or visit http://www.fargodentalcare.com/services/.

How Long Will A Dental Crown Last?

cost of dental crowns Fargo

Fargo endodontists, oral surgeons, and general dentists use dental crowns (sometimes called caps) in many restorative treatments. A crown adds strength to a tooth that has a large filling or has been injured, a crown can correct bite misalignments, and a crown is usually necessary after a root canal. In a dental implant procedure, attaching the crown to the abutment is the final step.

Crowns are also used extensively for purely cosmetic problems: yellow teeth, stained teeth, too-small teeth, and teeth that are misshapen.

Dental crowns are fabricated from a variety of materials that vary in appearance and strength:

1. All ceramic (porcelain-based)
2. Porcelain fused to metal
3. Gold alloys
4. Base metal alloys

Your dentist can help you determine which type is right for you. Factors to consider are: the location of the crown in the mouth, your budget, and any allergies to metal.

When many Fargo dentists provide a crown restoration, they use a process that requires two office visits. On the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth and take an impression for the dental lab. Then, the dentist will make a temporary crown for the patient to use until the permanent crown is ready. Some dentists have special technology that allows them to fabricate and place crowns in one visit.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last? Dental crowns can last for many years, but are not designed to last indefinitely. Even with proper care, dental patients should not expect crowns to be trouble-free for decades. There is encouraging evidence, however, that points to a high success rate: a 2009 study found that more than 90% of dental crowns will not require treatment within five years of placement. The study also found that 50% to 80% last from 15 to 20 years.1

At Designer Smiles in Fargo, we provide quality restorative and cosmetic dentistry. In addition to dental crowns, we offer porcelain veneers, general dentistry, and teeth whitening

Is Mouthwash A Must?

Fargo after hours dental

If you’ve ever walked the aisles of any Fargo, North Dakota drugstore, you know that there are many different types of mouthwash. Some tout their germ-killing abilities, others emphasize their fluoride content, and some claim to whiten teeth while freshening the breath. These are all great benefits, but will they make or break your dental health?

Many folks in the Fargo area wonder if daily mouthwash should be part of their dental routine. Brushing and flossing are the two critical habits that have the greatest affect on dental health, so if you’re doing these two things, is mouthwash needed?

I’m Dr. Dennis Hetland of Designer Smiles in Fargo. When my dental patients ask about mouthwash, I tell them that as long as they follow the directions on the bottle, mouthwash may slightly benefit dental health, even if it doesn’t live up to every promise as advertised. Rinsing with a mouthwash that contains fluoride can’t hurt your teeth, but allowing a bit of diluted toothpaste to stay on tooth surfaces after brushing probably has the same benefit.

People who suffer from bad breath often believe that mouthwash can solve the issue. Actually, mouthwashes that contain alcohol can worsen the issue because they can cause dry mouth – a condition that can contribute to bad breath. Mouthwashes without alcohol are often more effective for freshening breath. These products are usually called flouride rinses.

If you have chronic bad breath, however, you should have your teeth checked for plaque build-up. No amount of mouthwash can remedy a mouth full of plaque. If your teeth and gums are healthy and you still suffer from bad breath, it’s important to confirm the cause. Bad breath can be an indication of a physical condition, so see your doctor soon.

Bottom line? Never substitute mouthwash for proper brushing and flossing. And if you use mouthwash, opt for a brand that contains fluoride and no alcohol.

Thank you for visiting the Fargo dental blog. We like to tackle important issues such as dental products, cosmetic dentistry procedures, over-the-counter teeth whitening, sedation dentistry, invisible braces, pediatric dentistry, oral care habits, and more!
